Independent drinking

We have been working on drinking independently and have heard much about the "honey bear". From what I gather, the concept is that the child places his/her mouth on the straw to "drink". The design allows the parent to gently squeeze the bear pushing the liquid to the child's mouth. Eventually, the child will begin drinking on his own.
I was on the brink of ordering a prized bear when I came across this beauty at the grocery store. Viola- the same concept but made by Rubbermaid and for less that 50% of what that cute little bear costs. AND the straw looks to be the same size as a normal straw, so if we ever loose it or it gets chewed to pieces I can easily just cut another down to fit our Rubbermaid box.
A few weeks ago I thought we'd try the box just to see how Charlie would do. I figured it would take several days or more to get it down pat. Within about 20 seconds C was drinking like a pro never to look back. So he now gets water throughout the day from his box. Occasionally I will add some formula but he doesn't seem to prefer that over the water.
Just wanted to share another tidbit about what works for us.
In Him,
E

We used the same thing for Laura, and in no time we were able to keep the cups at home and use straws and cups at the restaurants. We always keep a few straws handy just in case, too. Way to go, C!

Kaleb too went from bottle to straw..loves drinking from straw and has since a year old : ) our therapist purchased the sippy bear for anthony..told her it looked like a honey bear..have those could just stick a straw in..someone made lots of money off that invention : ) love the rubbermaid sippy cup you found..walmart has disposable straw cups too..they are cheap and nice to keep in case of emergencies..not as nice as yours with the lid that closes : ) thanks for sharing

This is what Eon started on, too! Love it! Now, he's an old pro and can drink out of any straw, but it was so nice to have in the beginning. (and even nicer that it was so cheap!)

I just saw your blog for the 1st time, your Charlie is absolutely adorable, I look forward to following your journey. I really enjoyed reading some of your earlier post as well.

I just got the honey bear for my daughter, I kept thinking there must be an alternative but didn't really search for one. She learnt to drink from a straw in 2 days, so I was thrilled. We are now starting the straw therapy with her.
